Collaborative Member Spotlight: Literacy Pittsburgh

Nov 5, 2018

Literacy Pittsburgh (www.literacypittsburgh.org) creates better lives through learning with free educational programs for adults and families. One in seven adults struggles with limited reading or English language skills, hampering their ability to reach their full potential as neighbors, parents and workers.

Literacy Pittsburgh students receive classroom instruction or one-to-one tutoring in:

  • Reading, writing, math
  • High school equivalency diploma prep
  • Career transitions assistance
  • Workplace skills
  • English as a second language (ESL)
  • U.S. citizenship test preparation

Students go on to enroll in job training, earn promotions, and inspire their own children to value education. The demand is great and there is currently a waiting list of 200 students. Volunteer tutors are needed to help these waiting students reach their goals. South Hills tutor trainings are scheduled for January and more details can be found at www.literacypittsburgh.org/volunteers or by contacting Roberta Hatcher at rhatcher@literacypittsburgh.org or (412) 393-7645.
