Since its founding in 2017, STEM Coding Lab (SCL) has been dedicated to providing K-8 students with the skills needed to succeed in a digital economy. We believe that experiential learning methods for teaching computer science (CS) at a young age (K-8) is the best way to prepare our youth today for tomorrow’s job market. SCL’s curriculum and content focus on the following: CS/AI/STEM Curriculum: SCL’s curriculum is focused on providing critical STEM and CS concepts and skills to children across K-8 grades. From CS Fundamentals, Hummingbird Robotics, Gaming App Design, Finch Robotics, and AI in Society, SCL offers a strong curriculum that is geared towards experiential learning. Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, our independently-curated curriculum will follow the Pennsylvania STEELS standard requirements for grades K-8. Throughout the program, the students build skills in areas including problem solving, critical reasoning, coding, engineering, and emerging technologies. Experiential Learning: We teach CS and STEM concepts using robotics and gaming/animation to promote “experiential learning” which is known to improve visuospatial working memory, logical reasoning, abstract thinking, and team work. Experiential learning can help build reward circuits in young children, reinforcing a feedback loop that can make them enjoy and stay engaged with STEM subjects, which is known to increase the likelihood of them pursuing a future STEM education and career. In-Person Delivery: Our in-person computer science classes for K–8 children go beyond screens and code. We also nurture the deeper values that shape who we are with emphasis on gratitude for those who make this learning possible, respect for each other’s journeys, and the power of love and kindness in every interaction. We strive to create an environment where curiosity meets character, and both are equally celebrated. With in the Jefferson area, we support youth at the Duquesne City School District for grades K-8 ensuring that youth receive CS education weekly over 28 weeks. Our programming is in partnership with the School District during the day and Community Based Organizations during out of school time hours.Organization Information
